In construction projects, fireproof coatings are often required. Depending on their performance, there are two types: intumescent and non-intumescent. Let’s take a look at non-intumescent fireproof coatings.

Non-intumescent fireproof coatings are generally made from inorganic materials, primarily thermal insulation materials. During application, the coating is relatively thick, and it does not expand or foam when exposed to fire. Instead, it relies on the inherent properties of the thermal insulation material to block heat. Due to the thick coating, direct flame exposure may cause some material components to decompose and evaporate, with the resulting reactions absorbing heat, thus providing a longer fire resistance duration.

I. Types of Non-Intumescent Fireproof Coatings

These include indoor non-intumescent fireproof coatings (thin and ultra-thin types), outdoor non-intumescent fireproof coatings (thin and ultra-thin types), market-type protective coatings, and cable fireproof coatings, among others. Non-intumescent fireproof coatings function by providing fire insulation and heat resistance during a fire incident. Since they do not expand and have low thermal conductivity, they effectively extend fire resistance time, thereby offering fire protection.

II. How Non-Intumescent Fireproof Coatings Provide Fire Protection:

1. The coating itself is flame-retardant or non-combustible.

2. Under flame or high-temperature conditions, the coating releases fire-extinguishing gases and forms an inorganic "glaze" layer that isolates air.

With socio-economic development, ultra-high-rise steel structures, large-span steel factories, civil buildings, and general industrial steel structures increasingly use thick fireproof coatings. By innovating and developing traditional application methods for thick steel structure fireproof coatings, and clarifying requirements for interlayer intervals and mix ratios, we better address issues such as hollowing, cracking, and detachment that occur in general spray application projects. This improves project quality, shortens construction time, and ensures that the fire resistance performance of thick fireproof coatings in steel structures meets design and regulatory standards.

III. Recommended Measures for Natural Environmental Conditions:

(1) For areas near doors, windows, and peripheral sections, use colored tarps for protection. In conditions with strong wind and air humidity below 40%, control the application time for each coat to no more than 2 hours, then proceed immediately to the next layer following the first layer’s spraying sequence. Ensure all three coats are applied continuously in this cycle until completed. When air humidity is above 70%, appropriately extend the interval between coats, allowing the surface to reach 30-40% dryness (approximately 4 hours apart).

(2) After application, maintain the steel structure by wrapping it in plastic film for 12 hours. The curing period is generally 3-4 days.

(3) For detailed treatment of corners, special-shaped components, and joints that are not timely or dense, take the following measures: * Seal gaps in steel structure joints, carefully spray detailed areas, and apply alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh.
