Slowly oxidizes to phosphoric acid in air; decomposes to phosphoric acid and phosphine (highly toxic) when heated to 180°C. Phosphorous acid is a dibasic acid, slightly stronger in acidity than phosphoric acid. It has strong reducing properties, readily reducing Ag⁺ ions to metallic silver and reducing sulfuric acid to sulfur dioxide. It exhibits strong hygroscopicity and deliquescence, and is corrosive.

Product Uses: It is a raw material for the production of phosphites, as well as for manufacturing plastic stabilizers (such as lead phosphite) and organophosphorus pesticides. Used as a stabilizer for polycarbonate.

Also used as an antioxidant for Nylon 1010.
