III. Categories

1. Broadband Damping Optical Tables: Broadband damping means absorbing and dissipating vibrational energy across a wide frequency range. It is widely used in vibration isolation tables to reduce structural vibrations on the tabletop. Typically, broadband damping involves energy-absorbing materials such as foam, rubber, or elastomers. It may also include masses/plates and rubber mounted along the sides of the table to absorb moderate vibrations across a broad frequency range that covers the resonances of standard-sized optical tables. Broadband damping does not target any specific table resonance or any particular set of frequencies; instead, it uniformly absorbs and dissipates vibrational energy across the entire frequency spectrum. It is generally cost-effective and suitable for applications that do not require high damping performance.

2. Precision-Tuned Damping Optical Tables: A tuned mass damper is a device consisting of a mass, spring, and damper attached to a structure to reduce its dynamic response. It is tuned to a specific structural frequency so that when the table resonance is excited, the damper will resonate out of phase with the structural motion of the table. The vibrational energy is then dissipated by the damping inertial force acting on the structure. Among all known passive damping methods, tuned mass damping is the most effective because it concentrates the damping action on the frequencies of the primary resonance modes.

Newport's precision-tuned dampers (U.S. Patent 8857585) are specifically designed tuned mass dampers with precise tuning capabilities, capable of withstanding load variations of up to hundreds of pounds. Each damper targets one of the table's primary resonance modes, and Newport typically uses six dampers (RS4000) to effectively reduce resonance amplitudes across a broad frequency range. Because these dampers can be tuned to very low frequencies, they effectively dampen optical tables with low resonance frequencies—a scenario where broadband damping may not perform well.

3. Active and Hybrid Damping Optical Tables: Unlike passive damping methods such as broadband damping or tuned mass damping, Newport's SmartTable product line features active damping with IQ Technology (U.S. Patents 7320455, 8196891, 8807515, 9086112, 8277683, 8231098, 8651447, and 8857585). Instead of passively absorbing vibrations, active damping systems sense vibrations in real time and immediately send signals to actuators to counteract and eliminate them. By incorporating two pairs of sensors and actuators into the optical table design, it effectively addresses the resonance issues of optical tables and uses an external controller to coordinate signal processing, enabling fast and accurate damping responses. Active damping systems represent the cutting-edge damping technology for optical tables.

Hybrid damping combines the advantages of active damping and tuned mass damping, offering the highest performance optical tables on the market. The active system further reduces vibrations on top of the solid foundation provided by precision-tuned dampers, resulting in optical tables and systems with minimal resonance peaks.
