E-Fluid Electric Lubrication Test -- High-Speed Bearing Test Rig
Gears and bearings in electric vehicle drivetrains require a new generation of lubricants. Electric vehicle lubricants or e-fluids/greases must meet more specifications than those used in IC engines.
For example, anti-wear e-fluids must also reduce noise, conductivity, copper corrosion, and cool the battery pack. These specifications are not priorities for conventional lubricants in IC engines. Additionally, e-lubricants and greases must be customized according to the motor/drivetrain designs of different automotive manufacturers. Given these current and emerging challenges, we have designed and manufactured an electric lubrication test rig with a high-speed bearing module for developers of e-fluids/greases.
This high-speed bearing module features a two-stage test bearing operating at speeds up to 30,000 rpm, with an axial load of 5 kN and a radial load of 15 kN. The bearings can be lubricated with e-grease heated to 150°C or e-fluid heated to 150°C. The performance of the lubricant is evaluated based on bearing ring temperature, friction torque, vibration, noise, and bearing current.
Applications
• Mapping E-Fluid electric lubrication energy efficiency using bearing friction torque vs. speed characteristics.
• Estimating the lifespan of e-grease at high speeds using a sudden death test method based on cutoff temperature or friction torque.
• Conducting accelerated tests using heated grease within HTPL and LTPL ranges.
• Noise and vibration characteristics of E-Fluid electric lubricants/greases under different torque vs. speed curves.
• Analyzing the electrical insulation capability of E-Fluid electric lubricants/greases by varying applied torque and speed to prevent wear from discharge.
• Evaluating E-Fluid electric lubrication methods using controlled oil recirculation in mist or splash forms.
• Analyzing the performance of E-Fluid electric lubricant/grease additives using friction coefficient, vibration, and temperature.
• Assessing E-Fluid electric lubricant aging through visual inspection of foam and color changes due to fluid shear during testing.
