OKE Ball ValveOverview
A ball valve is a type of valve with a spherical closure element that rotates around the centerline of the valve body to open or close. The main components of a ball valve include the ball, seat, stem, and operating mechanism. The ball is typically spherical with a passage through its center; rotating the ball controls the flow in the pipeline. The seat acts as a positioning device for the ball, usually made of metal, plastic, or elastic materials, and forms a seal with the ball to prevent medium leakage. The stem is an axis that runs through the center of the ball, connecting it to the operating mechanism. Through the rotation or actuation of the operating mechanism, the ball rotates to open or close the pipeline. Operating mechanisms include manual types (such as handles or gears) and automated types (such as electric motors or pneumatic actuators), controlled either manually or via electrical or pneumatic signals.
Features/Advantages
Low fluid resistance: Full-bore ball valves have minimal flow resistance, making them among the valves with the least fluid resistance. Even reduced-bore ball valves exhibit very low fluid resistance.
Simple structure, compact size, and light weight: Ball valves are relatively simple in structure, small in size, and lightweight, making them easy to install and maintain.
Excellent sealing: Ball valves have two sealing surfaces, often made from various plastics (such as PTFE or other elastic materials), providing excellent sealing and enabling complete tightness, even in vacuum systems. The sealing force increases with medium pressure.
Easy operation and quick opening/closing: With only a 90-degree rotation required from fully open to fully closed, ball valves are suitable for remote control and automation.
Easy maintenance: The simple structure of ball valves, along with generally removable seals, makes disassembly and replacement convenient.
Wide range of applications: Sizes range from a few millimeters to several meters, and they can be used from high vacuum to high pressure. Due to their wiping action during operation, ball valves can handle media containing suspended solid particles.
Additional advantages: The stem seal is reliable, and during operation, the stem only rotates 90 degrees, reducing the risk of seal damage. The reverse sealing force on the stem increases with medium pressure. When fully open or closed, the sealing surfaces of the ball and seat are isolated from the medium, preventing erosion.
Classification of Ball Valves

Applications of Ball Valves
On/off control in piping systems requiring tight sealing.
Systems handling slurries, abrasives, or reduced ports.
Systems requiring quick opening/closing (quarter-turn operation).
High-pressure shutoff (high differential pressure), low-noise systems with cavitation or vaporization.
Systems with minimal leakage to atmosphere, low operating torque, and low fluid resistance.
Lightweight structures, low-pressure shutoff (low differential pressure), and corrosive media.
Cryogenic (deep cold) devices and piping systems.
Oxygen pipelines in metallurgy (using strictly degreased ball valves).
Buried mainlines in oil and gas pipelines (using full-bore welded ball valves).
Systems requiring regulation (using specially designed V-port ball valves).
Piping systems in petroleum, petrochemical, chemical, power, and urban construction with operating temperatures above 200°C (using metal-to-metal sealed ball valves).
Precautions
Pre-installation: Ensure pipes can support the valve weight, are coaxial with the valve, and have parallel flange faces. Remove oil, welding slag, and other impurities from pipes.
Inspection and testing: Check valve markings for integrity and cycle the valve open and closed several times to verify proper operation.
Installation direction: Install according to flow direction indicators on the valve.
Power and signals: For electric ball valves, provide correct voltage and frequency with stable connections.
Operation and maintenance: Perform regular maintenance, including cleaning internals, inspecting seal wear, and lubricating moving parts.
Temperature and pressure: Understand the valve's temperature and pressure limits and operate within them.
Media compatibility: Select valves based on media properties; some media may require specific materials.
Troubleshooting: Refer to manufacturer guidelines for diagnosing and fixing issues.
Protective measures: During installation and use, prevent impacts, water, dust, etc.
Training: Ensure operators are trained in valve operation and maintenance.
Compliance: Follow relevant standards and codes, such as industrial automation and safety standards.
Avoid throttling: Do not use ball valves for throttling to prevent premature seal wear.
Avoid strong impacts or vibration: Prevent damage to the ball and seat during operation.
