| Physical and Chemical Properties | Colorless to white crystalline powder, odorless. Sweet taste, sweetness about 70% of sucrose. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether. Optically active. Racemic (dl-) aminopropionic acid melting point 295°C (decomposition), sublimates at 200°C. Levorotatory (l-)-2-aminopropionic acid melting point 297°C (decomposition); dextrorotatory (d-) body melting point 295°C (decomposition). Hydrochloride of levorotatory (l-) body is prismatic crystal, melting point 204°C (decomposition); N-acetyl derivative of levorotatory (l-) body crystal melting point 116°C; its N-phenyl derivative crystal melting point 152-154°C. |
