Cobalt tetroxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formulaCo3O4. Similar to ferric oxide, it can be approximately regarded as a compound formed by cobalt oxide (CoO) and cobaltic oxide (Co2O3). It appears as a black or gray-black powder. The loose density is0.5-1.5g/cm3, and the tap density is2.0-3.0g/cm3. Cobalt tetroxide slowly dissolves in hot sulfuric acid but is insoluble in water, nitric acid, and hydrochloric acid at room temperature. When heated above1200℃, it decomposes into cobaltous oxide. When strongly heated in a hydrogen flame to900℃, it is reduced to metallic cobalt.
