Babbitt metal is primarily used for the bushings, bearings, liners, and sleeves of large machinery spindles. Examples include: cement machinery, steel machinery, chemical machinery, papermaking machinery, ship machinery, compression machinery, coal mining machinery, mineral processing equipment, etc. It can also be used in large machine tools to replace brass, with equally good results.
In addition to manufacturing sliding bearings, due to its soft texture and low strength, Babbitt metal is often applied as wire or powder sprayed onto substrates like steel to make bushings. To prevent component segregation and refine the grain structure, a small amount of arsenic is often added.
According to national standards, Babbitt metal can be divided into two types: tin-based alloys and lead-based alloys. Lead-based alloys have lower strength and hardness compared to tin-based alloys and also exhibit poorer corrosion resistance. Therefore, when customers use Babbitt metal, they typically choose tin-based alloys, with common grades including ZChSnSb11-6, ZChSnSb8-4, ZChSnSb8-8, etc. Although the performance of lead-based alloys is not as good as that of tin-based alloys, many customers still choose to use them because they are more economical. Common grades for lead-based alloys include ZChPbSb16-16-2.

The structure of Babbitt metal consists of hard phase particles uniformly distributed in a soft phase matrix or soft phase particles uniformly distributed in a hard phase matrix. Babbitt metal has good wear resistance and anti-friction properties, certain compressive strength and hardness, sufficient fatigue strength, and load-bearing capacity. It also offers good plasticity and impact resistance, excellent anti-seizure properties, good compliance, good embeddability, as well as excellent thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and a low coefficient of thermal expansion.

Tin-based alloys: Tin-based alloys are tin-antimony-copper alloys. They have a low friction coefficient, moderate hardness, good toughness, and excellent running-in properties, corrosion resistance, and thermal conductivity. They are mainly used for bushings operating under high-speed and heavy-load conditions.
Composition of tin-based alloys: The main components of tin-based bearing alloys are tin, lead, antimony, and copper. Among these, antimony and copper are used to enhance the strength and hardness of the alloy. Common grades of tin-based alloys include 11-6, 4-4, 7.5-3, 12-3-10, 8-4, 12-4-10, 8-8, 10-6, etc. These alloys are used to manufacture bushings, sleeves, and liners for mechanical sliding bearings. They are primarily used in spherical bushings for various models of ball mills in building material machinery; bushings for beaters and dryer cylinders in paper mill machinery; bushings for various parts of turbines in hydropower equipment; bushings for propeller shafts in ship machinery; bushings for compressors, crushers, and rolling mills.
