During industrial production, many harmful foams are generated, necessitating the addition of defoamers. There are various types of defoamers, including silicone, polyether, silicone and ether grafted, and those containing amines, imines, and amides. These defoamers feature faster defoaming speed, longer foam suppression time, and a wider range of applicable media, even in harsh environments such as high temperatures, strong acids, and strong alkalis. They are widely used to eliminate harmful foams in industries such as latex processing, textile sizing, food fermentation, biomedicine, coatings, petrochemicals, papermaking, and industrial cleaning.
Higher Alcohols
Higher alcohols are linear molecules that are strongly hydrophobic and weakly hydrophilic, making them effective defoamers in aqueous systems. In the early 1970s, Soviet scholars conducted experiments in aqueous solutions of anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants and proposed that the defoaming effect of alcohols is related to their solubility and diffusion in the foaming solution. C7~C9 alcohols are relatively effective defoamers.
Silicone defoamers are produced by mechanically emulsifying silicone grease, emulsifiers, waterproofing agents, thickeners, and an appropriate amount of water. They are characterized by low surface tension, high surface activity, strong defoaming power, low dosage, and low cost. They are immiscible with water and most organic substances and can defoam most foam media. They exhibit good thermal stability and can be used within a broad temperature range of 5°C to 150°C. They also have good chemical stability and are difficult to react with other substances.
