Magnesium hydroxide

Magnesium hydroxide (chemical formula Mg(OH)₂), CAS number: 1309-42-8 Magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂) is an important inorganic compound with the chemical formula Mg(OH)₂ and a molecular weight of approximately 58.32. At room temperature, it appears as a white amorphous powder or colorless hexagonal columnar crystals. Its unique physical and chemical properties make it widely applicable in industries such as industrial, pharmaceutical, and environmental protection.

Application Areas 

 1. Flame Retardant Materials: When heated, magnesium hydroxide decomposes and releases water vapor, diluting oxygen and lowering the combustion temperature. Simultaneously, the generated magnesium oxide covers the material surface to isolate flames, making it widely used as a flame-retardant filler in polymer materials such as plastics, rubber, and cables. 

 2. Environmental Protection - Acidic Wastewater Neutralization: Its ability to neutralize acidic wastewater is superior to lime and does not cause secondary pollution. Flue Gas Desulfurization: It replaces caustic soda in flue gas desulfurization, reducing sulfur dioxide emissions. 

 3. Pharmaceutical and Food Industry - Antacid: Neutralizes stomach acid and is used to treat heartburn, indigestion, and gastric ulcers, commonly found in medications such as magnesium milk tablets. Laxative: Promotes intestinal peristalsis through osmotic action. Food Additive: Serves as a color fixative or pH regulator, requiring strict purity standards (e.g., loss on drying ≤2.0%, arsenic content ≤3ppm).
