ElectronicOrganic Solvent Nanofiltration: A New Frontier in Molecular Separation

      The ability to achieve molecular-level separations in aqueous solutions using membranes was realized in the late 20th century, followed by the separation of ions and other molecules through reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. Until recently, these two separation technologies were almost exclusively used for wastewater treatment, desalination, and the food and beverage industries. Over the past decade, membrane separation of molecules dissolved in organic liquids (organic solvent nanofiltration, OSN) has emerged as a new field of membrane separation science, due to its broad application prospects in chemistry-related industries. This reflects its significant potential benefits. Why? Common purification processes (such as distillation, extraction, chromatography, adsorption, and crystallization) are either energy-intensive, material-intensive, or face stability issues. It is widely acknowledged that "...separation processes account for 40-70% of industrial capital and operating costs...". A simple calculation can be made: concentrating a solute tenfold in a specific solvent using OSN technology consumes less than 10% of the energy required by thermal separation techniques (like distillation). Clearly, OSN can substantially reduce costs.
