[Product Use]

The Automotive Interior Thermal Radiation Melt Drip Characteristic Tester is developed and produced in accordance with the test requirements specified in Appendix 7 of ECE R118 to determine the melting characteristics of materials. It is used to test the melting, dripping, and combustion performance of thermoplastic materials under the influence of a primary heat source. It can test flexible and thin materials, such as cellulose in thermal insulation batting.

[Test Principle]

The Automotive Interior Thermal Radiation Melt Drip Characteristic Tester places the sample on a holder, with a distance of 30 mm between the sample and the radiation surface. A container, including cotton batting, is placed 300 mm below the grid of the holder. The electric heater is moved aside to a position where it does not radiate onto the sample, the switch is turned on, and after it operates stably, it is moved back above the sample to start timing. If the material melts and deforms, maintain the electric heater at a height of 30 mm. During the first 5 minutes of the test, if the material begins to burn, push the electric heater aside for three seconds, and after the flame extinguishes, move it back to its original position. Repeat the same operation, and finally observe whether the dripping material ignites or whether it ignites the cotton batting.

Sample holder: Stainless steel ring with an inner diameter of 118 mm, containing a stainless steel mesh with a diameter of 0.70 mm and a mesh size of 2.10 mm.

Sample size: 70×70 (mm), thickness not exceeding 13 mm.

Radiant heat source radiation surface: Transparent glass plate with a diameter of Φ100 mm ± 5 mm.

[Product Features]

[Sample Requirements]

Test sample size: 70*70 mm. Samples of finished products should also adhere to this size. If the product thickness exceeds 13 mm, the side in contact with passengers (interior, engine compartment, or independent heating compartment) should be machined down to 13 mm. If the thickness cannot be reduced, the certification testing agency will test the material at its original thickness and note this in the report. For composite materials, refer to Section 6.1.3 of the standard. If the structure is uniform, testing should be conducted.

For non-composite materials composed of layers of different components, all layers within a depth of 13 mm from the passenger contact surface (interior, engine compartment, or independent heating compartment) should be tested individually.

The total mass of the test sample should reach 2 g. If the sample weight is less than 2 g, the number of samples can be increased appropriately.

If the two sides of the sample are made of different materials, both sides must be tested, meaning eight samples are required for testing. Before testing, the samples and cotton batting should be conditioned at 23°C ± 2°C and 50% ± 5% humidity for at least 24 hours.
