Properties: 
Colorless crystals or white crystalline powder. Gradually turns black upon exposure to light. Decomposes at 1085°C. Soluble in nitric acid, ammonia water, and concentrated sulfuric acid; slowly soluble in 125 parts water and 71 parts boiling water; insoluble in ethanol. Slightly soluble in pure water, with solubility increasing as the pH of the solution decreases. Significant dissolution occurs when H+ concentration is sufficiently high. Relative density (d²⁹) 5.45. Melting point 657°C. Irritating. Used for colorimetric determination of nitrites, vanadates, phosphates, and fluorine. Determination of ethylene. Used in water quality analysis for the determination of chromium and cobalt.
