Povidone-iodine

Povidone Iodine is a complex of Povidone K30 and iodine, which has strong killing effects on bacteria, viruses, fungi, molds, and spores. It is stable, non-irritating, and completely water-soluble.

Mechanism of Action: PVP is a hydrophilic polymer with no inherent antibacterial activity. However, due to its affinity for cell membranes, it directs iodine directly to the bacterial cell surface, which significantly enhances iodine's antibacterial efficacy. Iodine targets the bacterial cytoplasm and cytoplasmic membrane, killing bacteria within seconds. When essential biomolecules for survival—such as thiol compounds, peptides, proteins, lipids, and cytosine—come into contact with PVP-I, they are immediately oxidized or iodinated by iodine, rendering them inactive and achieving prolonged bactericidal effects.
