Function and use:

Niclosamide is a lampricide and also a molluscicide, belonging to the salicylanilide derivatives. Its antiparasitic mechanism involves inhibiting the oxidative phosphorylation process in the mitochondria of the parasite's cells, reducing the production of the energy substance ATP, which causes the degeneration of the scolex and adjacent segments of the tapeworm, leading to its detachment from the intestinal wall and expulsion through feces. It is ineffective against eggs. The dead segments are easily digested and broken down by proteases in the intestinal cavity, releasing eggs and posing a risk of causing cysticercosis. It also has a killing effect on Oncomelania snails and the cercariae of Schistosoma japonicum. It can kill many types of snails, beef tapeworm (Taenia saginata), pork tapeworm (Taenia solium), fish tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium latum), dwarf tapeworm (Hymenolepis nana), and cercariae. In agriculture, it is mainly used to kill Pomacea canaliculata (also known as apple snails or golden apple snails) in rice fields. In public health prevention, it is used to kill Oncomelania snails (the intermediate host of schistosomiasis). Niclosamide undergoes rapid metabolic changes in water, so its duration of action is not long. It is also used in commercial fish ponds to kill and remove unwanted fish before refilling the pond with new water. Niclosamide is highly toxic to fish but has a very short half-life in water; new fish can be introduced just a few days after using this piscicide.
