Capric acid, also known as decanoic acid, is a by-product obtained from the hydrolysis of laurel oil, coconut oil, or Litsea cubeba oil during the production of lauric acid. It is mainly used to produce capric acid esters, which are used as fragrances, wetting agents, plasticizers, and food additives. It appears as white crystals with an unpleasant odor. It is insoluble in water but soluble in dilute nitric acid and most organic solvents.

Melting point 31.5°C, boiling point 270°C, 148-150°C (1.46 kPa), relative density 0.8858 (20/4°C), refractive index 1.4169 (40°C), vapor pressure 13 Pa (79°C). Practically insoluble in water (0.015g/100g at 20°C), soluble in alcohol, ether, benzene, chloroform, and carbon disulfide, also soluble in dilute nitric acid.

Mainly used to produce capric acid esters, which serve as fragrances, wetting agents, plasticizers, and food additives. It should be stored sealed in a cool, dry place.
