Differences between RTDs and Thermocouples:
1. Different Materials:
RTDs are made of metal materials sensitive to temperature (such as Cu50, Pt100, Pt1000, etc.), and the resistance value of these materials changes with temperature; thermocouples are made of two different bimetallic materials (such as platinum-rhodium/platinum, nickel-chromium/nickel-silicon, etc.), which generate a potential difference when the temperature changes, enabling temperature measurement.
2. Different Electrical Signals:
RTDs output resistance signals, while thermocouples output voltage signals.
3. Different Working Principles:
The working principle of RTDs is based on the characteristic that the resistance value of a conductor or semiconductor changes with temperature. When the temperature of the conductor increases, its resistance value changes. The working principle of thermocouples is based on the thermoelectric effect, where a thermocouple consists of two different conductors connected at both ends to form a circuit.
4. Different Measurement Ranges:
RTDs have a relatively narrow measurement range, while thermocouples have a very wide measurement range.
