Chlorinated Phenols Test
1. Introduction to Chlorinated Phenols
Chlorinated phenols refer to chlorinated derivatives of phenol, including all isomers of tetrachlorophenol, trichlorophenol, dichlorophenol, monochlorophenol, and ortho-phenylphenol. When wearing textiles containing residual chlorinated phenols, these compounds can enter the human body through the skin and accumulate biologically, posing potential health risks. As a result, many countries have imposed strict limits on the residual amounts of chlorinated phenols in textiles.
Chlorinated phenols, as common preservatives, mildew preventatives, and mothproofing agents in various auxiliaries and chemicals within the textile industry chain, present significant risks. However, through careful analysis, source control, and strict testing, it is possible to ensure that chlorinated phenols in textiles meet the safety limits required by relevant regulations.
2. Sources of Chlorinated Phenols
Tetrachlorophenol has bactericidal and preservative properties, effectively preventing fungal growth, inhibiting bacterial corrosion, and protecting against pests. It is used as a preservative in the storage and transportation of wool, leather, wood, dyes, printing pastes, and inks. It can also serve as a preservative and mildew stabilizer in textile printing pastes. Additionally, chlorinated phenols may exist as intermediates in the synthesis of certain dyes and remain as residues in dye products. Some chlorinated phenols may also be present as impurities in raw materials used in dye production.
3. Hazards of Chlorinated Phenols
Some chlorophenols, when exceeding certain levels, can be toxic to aquatic organisms and cause long-term adverse effects on aquatic environments. Certain chlorophenols are classified as endocrine disruptors, affecting estrogen levels and thyroid function, and may even be carcinogenic. Some chlorophenols enter the human body through inhalation or skin contact and can be highly toxic if levels exceed certain thresholds. Moreover, some chlorinated phenols release notorious dioxin-like compounds when burned, causing persistent environmental damage.
4. Testing Standards for Chlorinated Phenols
