1. Certification Introduction

SAA stands for the Standards Association of Australia, which is the standard-setting body in Australia. In 1999, it was transformed from an association into a limited company, known as Standards Australia International Limited, abbreviated as SAI. SAI is an independent joint-stock company with no direct relationship with the government. We often refer to Australian certification as SAA certification, but in reality, SAA is only the standard-setting body and does not issue product certification certificates.

Electronic and electrical products entering Australia (including Australia and New Zealand) must pass this certification and display the certification number on the product to legally enter the Australian market for sale. SAA does not have a fixed logo; it is represented by the certificate number. After a nationally recognized laboratory issues the certificate, the abbreviation code of the certification company and the registration number are marked as the "safety label." The certification number must be printed on the label.

2. Product Scope

SAA certification covers products that can be divided into two categories: mandatory electrical products and non-mandatory electrical products:

(1) Mandatory products (Declared Electrical Products) cover 56 major categories, such as external power supplies or chargers, wires, plugs, certain household appliances, lighting fixtures, etc. Regulated electrical products must obtain a certificate of approval issued by the monitoring authority, i.e., SAA certification, and display the mark (including the certificate number).

(2) Non-mandatory products (Non-Declared Electrical Products) refer to products outside the mandatory certification scope, such as commercial kitchen appliances. Although non-regulated products are not required to obtain certification, their safety is the responsibility of the seller/manufacturer, and they can voluntarily apply for certification. The monitoring authority will issue a Certificate of Suitability for products that meet the standard requirements. Electrical products that obtain the Certificate of Suitability can display the certificate number, with the last letter of the certificate indicating which state or territory issued it.

3. Application Methods

There are two ways to apply for SAA certification:

(1) Direct application;

(2) Conversion through a CB report. Currently, most customers use CB reports to convert to SAA. SAA testing standards are largely consistent with IEC and EN standards but have minor differences. Therefore, Australian differences must be included in the test report, with special attention paid to plug requirements. The voltage in Australia is 240V for single-phase and 415V for three-phase, with a frequency of 50Hz.

4. Application Process

(4) Issue the test report

(5) Submit the report to Australian authorities for review

(6) Issue the certificate upon approval
