1. Introduction to Sediments

Sediments are any particles that can be moved by fluid flow and eventually form a layer of solid particles beneath water or other liquids. Rivers, oceans, and lakes all accumulate sediments. Simple gravitational collapses produce sediments such as scree slopes, landslide deposits, and karst collapse features. Each type of sediment has different settling velocities, depending on its size, volume, density, and shape.
