Grinding is the final and essential process in the finishing of castings in foundry workshops. For grinders (i.e., grinding machines), the basic principles for selecting a model should include ease of operation, high efficiency, labor and grinding wheel savings, low labor intensity, long machine lifespan, and good economic benefits. That is, different grinding machine models should be chosen based on factors such as the size and geometry of the castings. Generally, small parts are processed using fixed grinders, while large parts use suspended grinders, where the casting remains stationary and the suspended grinder moves within a certain radius. Alternatively, handheld pneumatic or electric small grinders can be used to grind any part. Although convenient, these are inefficient, consume more small grinding wheels, involve high labor intensity, and are costly. Handcart-type grinders are more suitable for medium-height castings for grinding flat surfaces or cutting excess roots from gates and risers. The structure of a simple handcart-type grinder is extremely simple, and foundries of any scale can make their own. They are easy to use, effective, and the overall dimensions can be customized based on the casting[1].

Precautions

(1) Select the coarseness of the grinding wheel based on the material of the workpiece and the required processing precision. Softer metal materials, such as copper and aluminum, should use coarser grinding wheels, while workpieces requiring higher precision should use finer grinding wheels.
(2) Choose the appropriate grinding wheel surface based on the shape to be processed.
(3) The grinding wheel used must not have cracks, defects, or damage, and installation must be secure. This should be monitored during use; if cracks, defects, or damage are found, stop immediately and replace with a new one. If it becomes loose during operation, stop immediately and tighten.
(4) During grinding, operators should wear protective goggles to prevent injury from flying metal chips and sand particles.
(5) The pressure applied to the workpiece should be appropriate; excessive pressure will cause overheating and annealing of the processed surface, making it unusable in severe cases, and also rapidly reduce the grinding wheel's lifespan.
(6) For workpieces narrower than the grinding surface, do not grind only one part of the wheel continuously. Instead, move the workpiece left and right periodically across the grinding surface to maintain a relatively flat grinding surface for future processing.
(7) To prevent overheating and annealing of the processed surface, the grinding area can be immersed in water for cooling at any time.
(8) Regularly measure the motor's insulation resistance, ensuring it is not less than 5MΩ. Use a circuit breaker with a leakage protection device to connect to the power supply.
