Uses of Isopropanol
Isopropanol is the simplest secondary alcohol and one of the isomers of n-propanol. In 1920, the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey in the United States used propylene from refinery gas to produce synthetic isopropanol, which is considered the beginning of the petrochemical industry. Therefore, it is regarded as the first chemical product derived from petroleum raw materials in the history of petrochemical development.
Isopropanol is widely used as an organic raw material and solvent. As a chemical raw material, it can be used to produce acetone, methyl isobutyl ketone, diisobutyl ketone, isopropylamine, isopropyl ether, isopropyl alcohol ether, isopropyl chloride, as well as isopropyl esters of fatty acids and chlorinated fatty acids. In fine chemicals, it can be used to produce isopropyl nitrate, isopropyl xanthate, triisopropyl phosphite, aluminum isopropoxide, and pharmaceuticals and pesticides. As a solvent, it can be used in the production of coatings, inks, extractants, aerosol agents, etc. It is also used as an antifreeze, cleaning agent, gasoline additive, dispersant in pigment production, fixing agent in the printing and dyeing industry, and anti-fogging agent for glass and transparent plastics.
In many industrial and consumer products, isopropanol is used as a low-cost solvent and extractant, and in many cases, it can replace ethanol. Isopropanol is also used as a solvent for oils and colloids, as well as in the manufacture of fishmeal feed concentrates. Low-grade isopropanol is used in automotive fuels. The use of isopropanol as a raw material for acetone production is declining. Several compounds are synthesized from isopropanol, such as isopropyl esters, methyl isobutyl ketone, isopropylamine, diisopropyl ether, isopropyl acetate, thymol, and many esters. The conventional quality of anhydrous isopropanol is above 99%, while specialty grades have a content of over 99.8% (used in fragrances and pharmaceuticals).
Isopropanol is an important chemical product and raw material, mainly used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, plastics, fragrances, coatings, and the electronics industry as a dehydrating agent and cleaning agent. It is used as a reagent for the determination of barium, calcium, magnesium, nickel, potassium, sodium, and strontium. It serves as a reference substance in chromatographic analysis. In the circuit board manufacturing industry, it is used as a cleaning agent and for making PCB hole conductors. Additionally, it is used in other electronic devices, including cleaning CD cases, floppy disk drives, tapes, and laser heads in CD or DVD player drives. Isopropanol can also be used as a solvent in flexographic, lithographic, and gravure printing, as well as an equipment cleaner. It is often included in inks. It is also an important solvent for dilution and extraction in laboratories. Furthermore, isopropanol is used as a gasoline additive and de-icing agent for fuel pipelines. In the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, isopropanol is used to produce scrubbing solutions, hand and body lotions, preservatives, and pharmaceutical rubefacients. It is also used in paints, thinners, coatings, cleaners, polishes, surface sterilization, hospital disinfection, and food processing plants.
Isopropanol is an important intermediate in pesticide production. It can be used to produce fungicides such as isoprothiolane and iprobenfos, insecticides and acaricides such as propetamphos, isocarbophos, methyl isofenphos, propoxur, and fenvalerate, as well as the herbicide propisochlor. It can also be used to prepare isopropyl bromide and isopropyl chloride, which are important intermediates in pesticide production.
Currently, isopropanol in China is mainly used as a solvent in the ink and pharmaceutical industries, accounting for about 50% of the total demand. However, due to competition from ethanol, the growth rate in this field is expected to slow down. The demand for isopropanol in organic intermediates accounts for about 25% of the total demand, while other various additives and isopropyl esters account for about 25%. The application of isopropanol in electronic industrial cleaners has become one of the fastest-growing areas of global isopropanol demand. China has now become the world's major production base for electronic appliances. The application in this field in China is just starting, with huge development potential and broad market prospects.
