Uses of Triethylamine
Triethylamine is the simplest symmetrical tertiary amine that is liquid at room temperature, making it widely used as a solvent and base in organic synthesis. It is one of the most commonly used organic bases in organic synthesis. With a boiling point around 89 degrees Celsius, it is relatively easy to remove by distillation. Its hydrochloride and hydrobromide salts are not highly soluble in organic solvents, so they can sometimes be separated directly by filtration. Under normal conditions, it is a colorless gas and must be stored in pressurized gas cylinders or as a 40% aqueous solution, making it less convenient to use than triethylamine. Triethylamine can be used as a basic catalyst in Swern oxidation reactions, dehydrohalogenation and other elimination reactions, Heck reactions, the preparation of silyl enol ethers, the conversion of acyl chlorides to esters and amides, and the protection of hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amino groups. It reacts with hydrochloric acid to form triethylamine hydrochloride and with alkylating agents to form the corresponding quaternary ammonium salts.
Triethylamine is used in the production of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, polymerization inhibitors, high-energy fuels, rubber vulcanizing agents, and more. In the organic synthesis industry, it serves as a solvent, catalyst, and raw material. It can be used to produce catalysts for polycarbonate synthesis, inhibitors for tetrafluoroethylene polymerization, rubber vulcanization accelerators, special solvents in paint removers, enamel anti-hardening agents, surfactants, preservatives, penetrants, waterproofing agents, bactericides, ion-exchange resins, dyes, fragrances, drugs, high-energy fuels, and liquid propellants. In the pharmaceutical industry, triethylamine is consumed in the production of products such as ampicillin sodium, amoxicillin, cefalexin, cefazolin sodium, cefradine, piperacillin, ketoconazole, vitamin B6, enoxacin, praziquantel, thiotepa, penicillamine, berberine hydrochloride, and verapamil.
