Native to India and Malaysia, it is widely distributed across Southeast Asian countries and Australia, with cultivation also found in tropical West Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean. In China, it is only sporadically cultivated. The tender fruit of the snake gourd is used as a vegetable, while the young leaves and stems are also edible.
