Acetonitrile, also known as methyl cyanide, is a colorless liquid that is highly volatile and has a distinctive ether-like odor. It possesses excellent solvent properties and can dissolve a variety of organic, inorganic, and gaseous substances.It is infinitely miscible with water and alcohol. Acetonitrile undergoes typical nitrile reactions and is used in the preparation of many nitrogen-containing compounds, making it an important organic intermediate. Acetonitrile can be used to synthesize Vitamin A, as well as a solvent for sulfonamide drugs and their intermediates. It is also used in the production of Vitamin B1 and amino acids as an active medium solvent. It can be used as a substitute for chlorinated solvents. It is applied in vinyl coatings and also serves as an extractant for fatty acids, a denaturant for alcohol, and an extractant for butadiene. It is also used as a solvent for synthetic fibers and has various applications in textile dyeing, lighting, fragrance manufacturing, and the production of photosensitive materials.
