Ethylene glycol

Ethylene glycol, also known as glycol or 1,2-ethanediol, abbreviated as EG. Its chemical formula is (CH2OH)2, making it the simplest diol. Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless liquid with a sweet taste, exhibiting low toxicity to animals. It is miscible with water but has low solubility in ethers. It is used as a solvent, antifreeze, and as a raw material in the synthesis of polyester fibers. The polymer of ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol (PEG), serves as a phase-transfer catalyst and is also used in cell fusion.
