The Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is an innovative wastewater treatment technology that organically combines modern membrane separation technology with biotechnology. It uses membrane separation equipment to effectively retain activated sludge and macromolecular organic substances in the biochemical reaction tank, replacing the secondary sedimentation tank. This significantly increases the concentration of activated sludge (biomass) in the biochemical reaction tank, allowing for separate control of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sludge retention time (SRT). It continuously retains and degrades hard-to-decompose macromolecular organic substances in the reactor. Therefore, MBR greatly enhances the treatment efficiency of the bioreactor through membrane separation technology. Compared with traditional biological treatment processes, it offers advantages such as high biochemical efficiency, strong resistance to impact loads, excellent and stable effluent quality, small footprint, long sludge discharge cycles, and ease of automation. It is currently one of the most promising biological wastewater treatment technologies in areas such as high-concentration organic wastewater treatment, domestic sewage treatment, and reclaimed water reuse.
