Determination of Accessible Parts

V.1 Accessible Parts of Equipment

V.1.1 General Requirements

Accessible parts of equipment are those parts that can be contacted by a part of the human body. To determine accessible parts, one or more specific test probes representing parts of the human body shall be used.

Accessible parts of equipment may include parts located behind doors, panels, removable covers, etc., that can be opened without the use of a tool. Accessible parts do not include those parts of floor-standing equipment with a mass exceeding 40 kg that become accessible only when the equipment is tilted. For equipment intended for built-in or rack mounting, or for components intended to be incorporated into larger equipment, accessible parts do not include those parts that are not accessible after the equipment or component is installed according to the installation instructions. If instructions or markings indicate that a part of the human body is to contact a part, that part is considered accessible. In such cases, no test is required, and it is irrelevant whether a tool is needed to access it.
