OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) Cable

OPGW cable (also known as Optical Fiber Composite Overhead Ground Wire) integrates optical fibers into the ground wire of overhead high-voltage transmission lines to form an optical fiber communication network along the transmission line. This structural design combines the dual functions of a ground wire and communication, commonly referred to as OPGW cable. A 250μm optical fiber is inserted into a loose tube made of high-modulus material, which is filled with a waterproof compound. The loose tube is longitudinally wrapped with a double-sided plastic-coated steel tape (PSP), and water-blocking material is added between the steel tape and the loose tube to ensure the cable's compactness and longitudinal water resistance. Two parallel steel wires are placed on both sides, and then a polyethylene sheath is extruded to form the cable.

Features: 1. Suitable for high-voltage lines exceeding 110kV with large spans (generally over 250M).

2. Easy maintenance and resolution of line-crossing issues, with mechanical properties capable of meeting large-span requirements.

3. The outer layer of OPGW is metal armor, which is unaffected by high-voltage electrical erosion and degradation.

4. OPGW installation requires power outages, resulting in significant outage losses. Therefore, it should be used in newly constructed high-voltage lines of 110kV and above.

5. In OPGW performance indicators, higher short-circuit currents require better conductor materials for armor, which correspondingly reduces tensile strength. To increase short-circuit current capacity while maintaining tensile strength, the metal cross-sectional area must be enlarged, leading to increased cable weight and diameter, thereby raising safety concerns for line tower strength.

Structure: OPGW cables are primarily used in 500kV, 220kV, and 110kV voltage level lines. Due to factors such as power outages and safety, they are mostly applied in new lines. There are three main types: aluminum-steel type, aluminum skeleton type, and (stainless) steel tube type.
