Litsea cubeba, also known as mountain pepper, mountain spicy tree, mountain ginger, wood spice, or wood ginger, is a deciduous shrub or small tree in the Lauraceae family, Litsea genus, reaching heights of 8-10 meters. The bark of young trees is yellow-green and smooth, while that of older trees is gray-brown. It has a pungent, slightly bitter taste, with an aromatic scent, and is non-toxic. It blooms from November to April of the following year, with both branches and leaves emitting a fragrant aroma. The root bark and leaves can be used for medicinal purposes. It has the effects of warming the kidneys, strengthening the stomach, promoting qi circulation, and dissipating nodules. It is used to treat stomach pain, vomiting, and unknown swellings and toxins.
Litsea cubeba is one of China's unique aromatic plant resources. It prefers sunlight or is slightly shade-tolerant, has shallow roots, and often grows in barren mountains, wastelands, shrubs, sparse forests, forest edges, and roadsides. It has strong sprouting ability and is propagated by seeds. It is mainly distributed in provinces and regions south of the Yangtze River in China, extending to Tibet.
