Marjoram (scientific name: Origanum majorana L.)
Latin name: Origanum majorana
is the name of a fragrant perennial herb native to the Old World. It can be used as a seasoning in cooking. Wild marjoram, or pot marjoram, can grow to a height of 30 to 76 centimeters. Its broad leaves are oval-shaped, and the flower clusters are sparse and pink-purple. This plant is commonly found in the wild and along roadsides in the eastern United States and can be processed into oregano spice.
Marjoram essential oil is derived from the distillation of its dried flowers, with a strong phenolic, grassy, and woody scent, very similar to thyme. The marjoram plant is a herbaceous plant less than 1 meter in height, with sturdy, hairy stems, broad and rounded leaves that are pointed at the tip, and purple flowers growing at the top. It is produced in the Middle East, Spain, France, the Balkan Peninsula, and the United States.
