Principle of Volumetric Karl Fischer Moisture Titrator
Karl Fischer reagent (a solution composed of iodine, sulfur dioxide, pyridine, and methanol or ethylene glycol monomethyl ether) can quantitatively react with water in the sample. The reaction equations are as follows:
H2O + I2 + SO2 + 3C5H5N → 2C5H5N·HI + C5H5N·SO3
C5H5N·SO3 + ROH → C5H5NH·OSO2·OR
The sample is dissolved in a suitable solvent (or the water in the sample is extracted), and titrated with Karl Fischer reagent of known titer. The titration endpoint is determined by the dead-stop method, allowing the mass fraction of water in the sample to be measured.
