Principle
Any water present in the sample (free water or water of crystallization) quantitatively reacts with the Karl Fischer reagent (a solution composed of iodine, sulfur dioxide, pyridine, and methanol) of known titer.
Note: Methanol can be replaced by ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. Using this reagent allows for more consistent titration volumes and enables the determination of water content in certain aldehyde and ketone chemical products without the need for any specialized techniques.

Principle
The Karl Fischer reagent (a solution composed of iodine, sulfur dioxide, pyridine, and methanol or ethylene glycol monomethyl ether) can quantitatively react with water in the sample. The reaction equations are as follows:
H2O + I2 + SO2 + 3C5H5N → 2C5H5N·HI + C5H5N·SO3
C5H5N·SO3 + ROH → C5H5NH·OSO2·OR
Dissolve the sample in a suitable solvent (or extract the water from the sample), titrate with Karl Fischer reagent of known titer, determine the titration endpoint by the dead-stop method or visual method, and then calculate the mass fraction of water in the sample.
