The UK Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Regulations require that all furniture products exported to the UK must meet fire resistance and flame retardancy requirements, and comply with fire safety labeling regulations.

Scope of application of this regulation:

-   Furniture for private use, including children's furniture

-   Beds, headboards, mattresses

-   Sofa beds, futons, and other variants

-   Nursery furniture

-   Garden furniture intended for indoor use

-   Furniture in caravans (trailer-type mobile homes)

-   Loose and upholstered cushions and seating

-   Pillows

-   Loose, stretchable covers for furniture

This regulation does not apply to:

-   Sleeping bags

-   Bedclothes (including duvets)

-   Loose covers for mattresses

-   Pillowcases

-   Curtains

-   Carpets

Fire safety testing standards used in this regulation:

BS5852: Test methods for assessment of the ignitability of upholstered seating by smouldering and flaming ignition sources

BS6807: Test methods for assessment of ignitability of mattresses, upholstered divans and upholstered bed bases with flaming types of primary and secondary sources of ignition.

Labeling requirements of this regulation:

-   Except for mattresses, bed bases, pillows, loose cushions and seating, and loose and stretchable covers for furniture, all new furniture should bear a display label at the point of sale.

-   All new furniture, except mattresses and bed bases, should bear a permanent label.
