New EN Standards for Non-Domestic Seating
New European Standards for Non-Domestic Seating
| The Technical Committee CEN/TC 207 “Furniture” of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has recently published two European Standards, EN 15373:2007 and EN 14703:2007, for the safety requirements and test methods of non-domestic seating. | The European Standard CEN/TC 207 "Furniture" Technical Committee recently published two European standards regarding the safety requirements and test methods for non-domestic seating: EN 15373:2007 and EN 14703:2007 |
EN 15373:2007 specifies requirements for the safety, strength, and durability of all types of non-domestic seating for adults weighing up to 110kg. These requirements include: a) Free from sharp edges and/or burrs b) Information for use c) No creation of shear and squeeze points d) Ends of hollow components shall be closed or capped e) Stability – the seating shall not overturn under the specified conditions. f) No unintentional roll of the unloaded seating. g) Strength and durability tests with reference to EN 1728:2000 | EN 15373:2007 specifies the safety, strength, and durability of all types of non-domestic seating capable of supporting adults weighing up to 110kg. Specific requirements are as follows: a) Free from sharp edges and/or burrs b) Usage information c) No shear or pinch points d) Ends of hollow components shall be closed or covered e) Stability—the seating shall not tip over under specified conditions f) Unloaded seating shall not roll unintentionally g) Strength and durability tests may refer to EN 1728:2000 |
| This EN 15373:2007 supersedes BS 7945:1999, the standard for determination of stability of non-domestic seating which is withdrawn. However, it does not apply to ranked seating, office work chairs, office visitors chairs, chairs for educational institutions, outdoor seating, and links for linked seating for which the EN 15373:2007 standards or drafts exist. It also does not cover requirements for the durability of upholstery materials, castors, reclining and tilting mechanisms and seat height adjustment mechanisms, resistance to ageing, degradation, and flammability. | It replaces the withdrawn BS 7945:1999—Test for Stability of Non-Domestic Seating. However, this standard does not apply to ranked seating, office chairs, guest chairs, chairs for educational institutions, outdoor seating, and linked seating covered by EN standards or draft standards. It also does not include requirements for the durability of upholstery materials, castors, reclining and tilting mechanisms, seat height adjustment mechanisms, aging resistance, degradation, and flammability. |
EN 14703:2007 specifies strength requirements and test methods for the links used for non-domestic seating, which can be linked together in a row. Tests carried out according to this EN 14703:2007 standard are for the purpose of demonstrating the ability of the links to function correctly in their intended environment. Fulfilling the requirements, however, does not ensure that the links will operate as expected in circumstances or emergencies that cannot be foreseen. Assessment of ageing and degradation are beyond the scope of this standard, while strength or durability requirements for individual chairs are to be covered under EN 15373:2007. The strength tests covered in this EN 14703:2007 include: a) Row displacement test (carried out on an assembly of 11 chairs linked together) b) Link strength test – Overturning test (carried out on an assembly of 11 chairs linked together) c) Strength test – Horizontal impact test (carried out on an assembly of 5 chairs linked together) d) Link performance of chairs is said to fulfill the safety requirement when either option (A or B) e) Option A: Chairs stay linked; or Option B: Chairs become disengaged | The strength tests outlined in EN 14703:2007 are as follows: a) Continuous displacement test (conducted on 11 chairs linked together) b) Link strength test—Overturning test (conducted on 11 chairs linked together) c) Link strength test—Horizontal impact test (conducted on 5 chairs linked together) d) After the link strength test, the linking performance of the chairs is considered to meet safety requirements if either condition (A or B) is satisfied. e) Condition A: Chairs remain linked. Condition B: Chairs become disengaged. |
