EN747-1-2007 Domestic Bunk Beds and High Beds, Bedding Safety Standard

Part Safety Strength and Durability Requirements

Introduction This part of EN747 specifies the requirements for domestic bunk beds and high beds. The loads and forces included in EN747-2 are based on adult single beds.

1. Scope: This standard covers the safety, strength, and durability requirements for domestic bunk beds and high beds. The strength and durability test loads and forces apply to beds with a maximum bed base width of 120 cm. This standard specifically aims to minimize the risk of accidents involving children. If bunk beds or high beds include other products such as tables or storage cabinets, the safety requirements for such products are not covered by this standard.

2. Referenced Standards: The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this standard. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition applies. EN 747-2:2007, Furniture – Bunk beds and high beds for domestic use – Part 2: Test methods

3. Terms and Definitions: For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 Bunk bed: A set of beds, one above the other; 3.2 High bed: A bed where the upper surface of the bed frame is at least 800 mm above the floor, regardless of the use of the space below the bed; 3.3 Bed base: The structure supporting the mattress; 3.4 Safety barrier: A component to prevent falling from the upper bed or high bed.

4. Safety Requirements:

4.1 Materials: Wood or wood-based materials must not be visibly infested;

4.2 Structure: Accessible edges and corners must be rounded or chamfered, free of burrs or sharp points. All assembly holes must be pre-drilled by the manufacturer;

4.3 Safety barrier: When the upper surface of the bed is 800 mm or more above the floor, a safety barrier must be installed around the bed. The safety barrier must prevent accidental loosening. This requirement is verified by the test in EN747-2, 5.4.2, if the safety barrier does not break or loosen. The safety barrier must not be removable without tools. The distance from the upper edge of the safety barrier to the upper surface of the bed base must be at least 260 mm. The upper surface of the mattress must be at least 160 mm below the upper edge of the safety barrier. The maximum mattress thickness must be permanently marked; see clauses 5d and 6b.

4.4 Holes, gaps, and openings: Specific requirements are provided in the following clauses---4.3 Safety barrier---4.5 Bed base frame---4.6.2 Footrests must not have holes, gaps, or openings with a diameter or width greater than 7 mm and less than 12 mm, unless the depth is less than 10 mm. Tube ends must not be open. All accessible holes, gaps, or openings must comply with one of the following---At least 12 mm but not more than 25 mm when tested according to EN747-2, 5.3---At least 60 mm but not more than 75 mm when tested according to EN747-2, 5.3---At least 200 mm. These dimensions must not reduce before or after testing.

4.5 Bed base foundation: According to EN747-2, 5.3, all gaps from the bed base to the side or end must not exceed 25 mm. According to EN747-2, 5.3, all gaps between components of the bed base, such as slats or springs, must not exceed 75 mm. According to EN747-2, 5.4.3, 5.4.4, and 5.4.5, the bed base and/or its components must not break, fall off, or separate. The distance from the upper surface of the lower bed base to the lower edge of the upper bed base must be at least 750 mm. The bed base must allow ventilation.

4.6 Ladder or other access means:

4.6.1 Adhesion, deflection, and strength       According to EN747-2, 5.6.1, the access means must not break or separate.       According to EN747-2,   5.6.1 and 5.6.2, no part of the access means may have permanent deformation exceeding 5 mm or break.

4.6.2 Footrest dimensions: The distance from the floor to the upper surface of any footrest must not exceed 400 mm. The distance between the upper surfaces of two consecutive footrests should be 250 ± 50 mm. The tolerance for the distance between the upper surfaces of footrests should be ± 5 mm. The distance from the top footrest to the highest point of the bed structure, such as the safety barrier entry point, must not exceed 500 mm. The distance between two consecutive footrests must be at least 200 mm, and the effective width of the footrest must be up to 300 mm. All footrest fronts must align within a straight line of ± 20 mm. The gap between any footrest and any part of the bed frame should be---less than 7 mm or---at least 12 mm but not more than 25 mm or---at least 60 mm but not more or    ---at least 200 mm. The effective tread depth must be at least 90 mm.

4.7 Strength of frame and fasteners: According to EN747-2, 5.4.2 and 5.5, the frame and structural fasteners must not be damaged or fail, and no components should separate.

4.8 Stability: According to EN747-2, 5.7, the bed must not tip over.

4.9 Fastening of upper and lower beds: According to EN747-2, 5.8, the upper and lower beds must remain connected and not detach.
