Ammonium persulfate is a white to slightly yellow, monoclinic crystal with the molecular formula (NH4)2S2O8. It has strong oxidizing and corrosive properties, decomposes easily when heated, is not prone to moisture absorption, and is readily soluble in water, with increased solubility in warm water.

Ammonium persulfate is prepared by electrolyzing a cold concentrated solution of ammonium sulfate or ammonium bisulfate in sulfuric acid at high current density.
