The solubility of manganese in magnesium is 3.4%. If the smelting method is properly controlled, a Mg-Mn single-phase solid solution structure containing a small amount of Mn crystals can be obtained. Manganese is a very effective purifying element for controlling impurities in magnesium, eliminating the adverse effects of impurities and reducing the self-corrosion rate of magnesium. During the smelting process of magnesium alloys, manganese and iron can form relatively large Fe-Mn compounds that deposit at the bottom of the melt, while the residual iron in the alloy dissolves in manganese or is surrounded by manganese, preventing the harmful effects of cathodic impurities. However, manganese tends to segregate in magnesium alloys, and excessive manganese can reduce the corrosion resistance and plasticity of the alloy. The manganese content in Mg-Mn series alloy anodes produced domestically and internationally is generally 0.5%-1.3%, with allowable impurity contents of iron and copper being less than 0.03% and 0.02%, respectively, which is more than ten times higher than the allowable impurity levels in pure magnesium anodes. Another function of manganese is to form a hydrated manganese dioxide film on the surface of the Mg-Mn anode during corrosion dissolution, which is more protective than the magnesium hydroxide film, further reducing hydrogen evolution. Some researchers have added a small amount of calcium to Mg-Mn alloys to develop a high-performance Mg-Mn-Ca alloy sacrificial anode material containing 0.26% Mn and 0.1% Ca. Compared to the Mg-Mn alloy (Mg-1.27Mn), this new alloy anode has a significantly higher current efficiency, reaching 62.36% (compared to 50.94% for the Mg-Mn alloy), and its driving voltage is also increased. Studies suggest that the addition of calcium refines the alloy grains and precipitates Mg₂Ca cathodic compounds at the grain boundaries of the magnesium matrix, thereby reducing intergranular corrosion tendency, minimizing grain spalling, and making the alloy dissolution more uniform. This is the main reason for the superior electrochemical performance of the Mg-Mn-Ca alloy.
To measure the protection potential of a magnesium alloy sacrificial anode, only a reference electrode and a multimeter are needed. For soil applications, a copper sulfate reference electrode is commonly used. Insert the portable copper sulfate reference electrode into the ground, connect one end of the multimeter to the wire of the copper sulfate reference electrode, and the other end to the wire leading from the pipeline to the test post. Based on the copper sulfate reference electrode, if the protection potential of the steel is between -0.85 V and -1.20 V, it indicates that the cathodic protection of the pipeline is successful.

Magnesium alloy sacrificial anodes, abbreviated as magnesium anodes, are also known as magnesium alloy anodes or magnesium sacrificial anodes. They are used in cathodic protection systems as important equipment and materials to prevent electrochemical corrosion. Due to their high potential, magnesium alloy anodes are often used for the cathodic protection of buried structures, such as buried oil pipelines, natural gas pipelines, and gas transmission lines.
