Polyethylene glycol is abbreviated as "PEG". It is a high molecular compound formed by intermolecular dehydration and condensation of ethylene glycol. Due to its many excellent properties: water solubility, non-volatility, physiological inertness, mildness, lubricity, and the ability to moisturize skin, provide softness, and a pleasant after-feel, polyethylene glycol can be selected in different relative molecular weight grades to adjust the viscosity, moisture absorption, and structure of products. Low molecular weight polyethylene glycol 200 is suitable as a wetting agent and consistency regulator, used in creams, lotions, toothpaste, and shaving cream, and is also suitable for non-rinse hair care products, giving hair a silky shine.

Under normal conditions, polyethylene glycol is very stable, but at 120°C or higher temperatures, it can react with oxygen in the air. In an inert atmosphere (such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide), it remains unchanged even when heated to 200–240°C. When the temperature rises to 300°C, thermal decomposition occurs. Adding antioxidants, such as 0.25%–0.5% phenothiazine by mass, can improve its chemical stability. Any decomposition products are volatile and do not form hard crusts or sludgy precipitates.
