Differences between Reference Material GBW and Standard Sample GSB:

Laboratory personnel in the testing industry often use reference material GBW and standard sample GSB, but few know the difference between the two. Today, we will explain in detail the differences between reference materials and standard samples to our peers in testing and calibration, hoping to help those who are unsure how to distinguish between them.

1. Differences in Management Agencies

Both reference material GBW and standard sample GSB are approved by the Standard Department of the International Technical Supervision Bureau and issued by the National Technical Supervision Bureau. However, reference materials are organized and reviewed by the National Reference Material Management Committee, while standard samples are organized and reviewed by the National Standard Sample Technical Committee.

2. Different Codes

The code for reference materials is GBW, while the code for standard samples is GSB.

3. Different Definitions

Reference materials are substances or materials with one or more sufficiently uniform and well-characterized property values. They are used to calibrate instruments, evaluate measurement methods, or determine the property values of materials.

Standard samples are batches of samples with one or more sufficiently uniform chemical, physical, biological, engineering, or sensory performance characteristics, technically certified, and accompanied by a certificate of relevant performance data.

4. Differences in Preparation Processes

The preparation of standard samples involves steps such as material preparation, homogeneity testing, value assignment, stability testing, packaging, review, approval, and issuance.

The preparation process for reference materials is largely similar to that of standard samples but with much higher requirements.

5. Different Uses

Standard samples are developed for the implementation and formulation of standards and are generally used only within the scope of the standards. As physical standards (as opposed to written standards), they cannot be used for metrological transfer.

Reference materials are metrological standards and can be used for metrological transfer, instrument calibration, evaluation of measurement methods, and determination of material property values. Where appropriate, they can also replace standard samples in the development and implementation of standards.

The above are the five differences between reference materials and standard samples. Additionally, reference materials are classified into primary reference materials GBW and secondary reference materials GBW(E). Internationally, there is no distinction between reference materials and standard samples. Reference materials serve as tools and means for value transfer, while standard samples are national physical standards developed to ensure the implementation of national or industry standards. For example, certain technical performance indicators of products, such as the appearance and color of wine or pigments, are difficult to describe clearly in words and require physical samples as supplements to written standards.

Nanjing Aikon Quanxin is committed to being your reliable partner, providing professional and efficient technical services to safeguard all sectors of society.
