Sound Enclosure is an effective noise reduction measure that encloses noisy equipment, effectively blocking the transmission and diffusion of noise to reduce its impact on the environment.

II. Sound Insulation Principle

The shell of the sound enclosure is made of a layer of airtight, heavy, and rigid metal material, typically 2–3 mm thick steel plates, covered with a damping layer. The damping layer is often made of fiber fabric or fiber material impregnated with damping glue (such as asphalt-impregnated burlap, fiberglass cloth, felt, or asbestos wool), and sometimes specially formulated damping slurry is used.

The damping layer is added to the shell to avoid the coincidence effect and low-frequency resonance of the plate. The shell can also be made of wood or plastic boards, while lightweight sound insulation structures may use aluminum plates. High-performance sound enclosures can be constructed as double-layer shells, with the inner layer being thinner than the outer layer; the gap between the two layers is typically 6–10 cm and filled with porous sound-absorbing material. The inner side of the enclosure is lined with sound-absorbing material to absorb sound and reduce noise within the cavity. This layer of sound-absorbing material is covered with a perforated protective panel, with the perforated area accounting for about 20–30% of the panel's surface area.

Between the enclosure and the machine, as well as between the enclosure and the foundation, rubber padding is usually installed to prevent vibration transmission. Access doors and observation windows must be well sealed. For equipment that requires heat dissipation, necessary ventilation ducts should be included in the sound enclosure. These ducts must feature sound-absorbing structures or be equipped with silencers. When designing a sound enclosure, it is important to meet process and maintenance requirements, and sometimes measures must be taken to prevent oil contamination, dust, and corrosion.
