Main Causes and Hazards of Scaling in Plate Heat Exchangers
During the use of plate heat exchangers, calcium, magnesium, and carbonates in the water decompose under heat into calcium carbonate and calcium hydroxide precipitates, which deposit on the heat exchange surfaces, forming hard scale. Due to the poor thermal conductivity of scale, the heat exchange efficiency of the exchanger is reduced, leading to severe energy waste.
Methods for Cleaning Plate Heat Exchangers
1. Chemical Circulation Cleaning Method
Chemical cleaning primarily involves adding cleaning agents to the water medium through a circulation pump, allowing the liquid to continuously circulate throughout the system to neutralize alkalis inside the heat exchanger, thereby achieving the cleaning effect. To achieve better results in cleaning plate heat exchangers, backwashing can be performed, which makes the effect more pronounced and facilitates the removal of undissolved impurities. The choice of cleaning agent is particularly important. For example, for stainless steel plate heat exchangers, hydrochloric acid cleaners and cleaning powders must not be used without prior chemical descaling, as hydrochloric acid cleaners can corrode the heat exchanger.
The advantage of chemical cleaning is its simplicity of operation, as it does not require disassembling the entire equipment.
2. Disassembly and Cleaning Method
The disassembly method is a common approach for cleaning plate heat exchangers. After the plates are removed, they can be soaked in a liquid containing cleaning agents. Once surface scale and other substances dissolve, the plates can be taken out and repeatedly cleaned with high-pressure cleaning equipment. The cleaning agents used in soaking are essentially the same as those in chemical cleaning.
Compared to chemical cleaning, this method offers better and more thorough cleaning results. However, the reassembly process after disassembly and cleaning is more labor-intensive, requiring the use of a specialized torque wrench to tighten bolts in a symmetrical sequence until all bolts are secured. The experience of the cleaning technician during installation is crucial, as maintaining parallelism in the plate bundle is essential. Otherwise, the plates may become permanently deformed, leading to gasket seal failure and subsequent leakage.
