Blue cobalt glass is a special type of fire-viewing protective goggles with excellent ultraviolet and infrared protection effects. It is specifically used as a fire-viewing lens in power plants, steel mills, and cement plants.

Blue cobalt glass is produced by adding cobalt blue during the glass manufacturing process. The addition of cobalt blue gives the glass its distinctive deep blue color and excellent light-filtering properties.

SiO2: 75.01%; B2O3: 0.27%; CaO: 4.18%; Na2O: 15.94%; K2O: 1.19%; CoO: 0.51%; Fe2O3: 2.9%

Function of blue cobalt glass:

When observing the flame test for potassium, it is necessary to view it through blue cobalt glass because potassium compounds are often impure and mixed with impurities such as Na+ (which is difficult to separate). During the flame test, Na+ burns with a yellow color, which interferes with the observation of K+’s flame color (purple). Therefore, the yellow light must be filtered out. According to the principle of complementary colors, yellow and blue are complementary colors. Using blue cobalt glass filters out the yellow light, allowing a clear view of potassium’s flame color—purple!

In industry, blue cobalt glass is widely used as protective goggle lenses in steel mills, cement plants, and other high-temperature kilns. It is an excellent protective glass that strongly absorbs infrared and ultraviolet rays, particularly completely absorbing ultraviolet light in the 250–320 nm wavelength range, which is harmful to human eyes. The glass has a deep cobalt blue color.

Common specifications include 50*50, 50*107, 50*100, and 100*200, with a maximum size of 800*500.

The thickness is generally 2.5 mm or 2.7 mm. Custom orders are required for special thicknesses of 4–6 mm.

Blue cobalt glass is specifically used as a viewing glass for rotary kilns in cement plants, helping to accurately determine the temperature of materials inside the cement rotary kiln.
