Methyl ester of fatty acid

  Fatty acid methyl ester is a yellow clear transparent liquid (colorless after distillation), with a mild, specific odor, stable structure, and non-corrosive. Fatty acid methyl ester is a raw material for widely used surfactants (SAA). From fatty acid methyl ester, two major types of surfactants can be produced: one is fatty acid methyl ester sulfonate (MES) produced through sulfonation and neutralization, and the other is fatty alcohol produced through hydrogenation.

  Globally, 57% of fatty alcohol is produced from fatty acid methyl ester, while 43% is produced from fatty acids. Fatty alcohol undergoes ethoxylation to produce alcohol ether (AE), and AE is sulfonated and neutralized to produce AES. Alternatively, fatty alcohol can be sulfonated and neutralized to produce PAS. Therefore, fatty acid methyl ester is a raw material and intermediate for SAA such as MES, AE, AES, and PAS. The supply of raw materials such as oils and fats, fatty alcohols, and fatty acid methyl esters determines the efficiency of the aforementioned SAA production.
