Analysis of Test Bench Base Load-Bearing Range and Selection Key Points
In the field of mechanical processing, the test bench base serves as the "fundamental reference" for equipment such as CNC machine tools, milling machines, and grinding machines. The rationality of its selection directly determines the stability of equipment installation and operational accuracy, thereby affecting the quality of part processing. If the material of the test bench base is mismatched, the specifications are incorrect, or the precision is insufficient, it may lead to issues such as part dimensional tolerance deviations and increased surface roughness in minor cases, or exacerbate equipment vibration, accelerate component wear, and increase production costs and rework rates in severe cases. The following sections detail the selection methods for test bench bases used in mechanical processing and their core impact on equipment processing quality from three key dimensions: material, specifications, and precision.
1. Material Selection: Matching Equipment Working Conditions to Build a Solid Foundation for Processing Quality
The mechanical properties of the test bench base material directly determine its resistance to deformation and vibration. Selection must be based on equipment load and processing type:
Priority should be given to gray cast iron, which is suitable for most mechanical processing scenarios.

Gray cast iron (e.g., HT250, HT300) is the mainstream material for test bench bases in mechanical processing. HT250 has a tensile strength of ≥250 MPa and a hardness of 170-240 HBW, capable of withstanding static loads and cutting vibrations of 10-50t equipment, making it suitable for ordinary lathes, milling machines, and other equipment. HT300 has a tensile strength of ≥300 MPa and a hardness of 180-250 HBW, offering stronger resistance to deformation and is suitable for high-precision equipment such as machining centers and grinding machines. For example, a machinery factory selected an HT250 test bench base for a machining center. Due to long-term full-load cutting (spindle speed 12,000 rpm), the table surface deformed by 0.08 mm/m after six months, causing the part processing dimensional tolerance to increase from ±0.008 mm to ±0.015 mm. After replacing it with an HT300 test bench base, the deformation was controlled within 0.02 mm/m, and precision stabilized.
Material acceptance must include aging treatment: The test bench base must undergo "natural aging for six months + artificial aging at 200-300°C for eight hours" to release internal stress and avoid precision drift caused by stress release during use. Manufacturers should provide aging treatment reports, and on-site hardness spot checks should be conducted to ensure hardness standards are met.
2. Specification Selection: Matching Equipment Size and Load to Avoid "Overloading" or "Waste"
The specifications (dimensions, load-bearing capacity) of the test bench base must match the equipment weight and installation dimensions. Improper specifications will directly affect equipment stability:
Size matching: Cover the equipment base and reserve operational space.
The length and width of the test bench base should be 100-200 mm larger than the equipment base to ensure the equipment is fully placed on the test bench base and avoid uneven force distribution due to edge overhang. For example, for a vertical machining center with a base size of 1.5 m × 2 m, a test bench base of 1.7 m × 2.2 m should be selected. If a 1.5 m × 2 m specification is chosen, the equipment edges may extend beyond the test bench base, causing vibration during processing and increasing part surface roughness from Ra 0.8 μm to Ra 1.6 μm.
Load-bearing capacity: Reserve a 25%-50% safety margin.
The rated load-bearing capacity of the test bench base should be 1.25-1.5 times the total weight of the equipment (including fixtures). For example, a milling machine weighing 10t (including 2t of fixtures) requires a test bench base with a rated load-bearing capacity of ≥15t to avoid long-term overloading causing table surface depression. A machinery factory, aiming to save costs, selected a 12t test bench base for a 12t equipment. After three months, the middle of the table surface sagged by 0.1 mm, resulting in flatness deviations (error 0.12 mm) in milled parts. After replacing it with an 18t test bench base, the sagging was eliminated, and precision was restored.
The selection of a test bench base for mechanical processing essentially involves matching material, specifications, and precision with equipment working conditions to build a "fundamental defense line" for processing quality. Choosing the right gray cast iron or ductile iron material can avoid deformation and vibration; matching dimensions and load-bearing specifications ensures equipment stability; and adapting precision levels controls processing errors. In practical selection, it is necessary to consider equipment type, part precision requirements, and budget, and request customized solutions and test reports from manufacturers to avoid selection risks at the source. Only by selecting the right test bench base can equipment performance be fully utilized, part rework rates reduced (by 5%-10%), and mechanical processing efficiency and quality improved, helping enterprises establish a firm foothold in the manufacturing field.
