The purpose of aeration Roots blowers in sewage treatment is to allow sufficient dissolved oxygen in the water to come into contact with gases, facilitating the process of dissolving oxygen, removing dissolved gases, and volatile substances from the water.

In the activated sludge method for wastewater treatment, the dissolved oxygen in the mixed liquor is replenished through aeration. The role of Roots blowers in sewage treatment is primarily to provide adequate dissolved oxygen for aerobic bacteria in the water and to supply the power for stirring the mixed liquor in the aeration tank. They are widely used in the aeration treatment of industrial wastewater from papermaking, textiles, printing and dyeing, electroplating, viscose fiber, food processing, fermentation, brewing, and urban domestic sewage.

The aeration methods used in activated sludge aeration tanks are divided into bubble aeration and mechanical aeration. In bubble aeration methods, such as fine bubble aeration, microporous diffusers, rotary cut diffusers, or microporous aeration pipes are installed at the bottom or near the bottom of the aeration tank during the biological treatment process of wastewater.

Because the diffusers that produce fine bubbles have a large submersion depth, the resistance of the fine pores in the diffusers increases. Therefore, higher pressure from the Roots blower is required. Their oxygen transfer efficiency is typically between 10% and 30%.

Mechanical aeration refers to the method of thoroughly mixing wastewater and sludge in the activated sludge aeration tank using mechanical equipment, continuously renewing the contact between the mixed liquor surface and the air to increase dissolved oxygen in the water.

Through the mechanical action of blades, impellers, sprayers, or turbine devices, atmospheric oxygen is introduced into the liquid. The widely used aeration machines currently are mainly surface aerators and submerged turbine aerators. Roots blowers for sewage treatment are still very effective.
