Introduction to Silver Ion Disinfectors

1、Technical Background

When domestic water containing large amounts of bacteria and organic matter enters the domestic hot water system, the bacterial growth and reproduction rate accelerates in pipe sections where the water temperature is ≤40°C, increasing the risk of microbial contamination. Foreign literature reports that the growth and death of Legionella (naked bacteria) are related to hot water temperature, with 35°C–46°C being the most ideal environment for Legionella reproduction.

2、Sterilization Principle

Silver in a high oxidation state has an extremely high reduction potential, sufficient to generate atomic oxygen in its surrounding space. Atomic oxygen possesses strong oxidizing properties that can eliminate bacteria. Silver ions (Ag+) can strongly adsorb the protease of bacterial bodies and rapidly combine with it, destroying the bacterial protease, preventing respiration, deactivating the bacteria, and leading to bacterial death. After bacteria are killed by silver ions (Ag+), the Ag+ ions are released from the bacterial corpses and come into contact with other colonies, repeating the above process cyclically. This is also the reason for the long-lasting sterilization effect of silver. Scientific analysis shows that as long as the water contains 0.0000002 mg of silver ions per liter, most bacteria in the water can be killed. When the Ag+ concentration in water is 0.01 mg/L, it can completely kill large bacilli in the water and prevent the growth of new bacterial colonies for up to 90 days. An American scientist once conducted an experiment in which 4.5 liters of sewage (containing over 7,000 E. coli per milliliter) were treated with silver electrodes for 3 hours, resulting in the complete death of all E. coli. It is precisely because of silver's strong sterilization ability and its harmlessness to humans and animals.

4、Composition of Silver Ion Disinfectors

The silver ion disinfector consists of a microelectronic controller, a housing, and silver ion generation electrodes. After the device is activated, the microelectronic controller outputs low-voltage direct current. Two silver metal blocks serve as the cathode and anode, respectively. Under the action of low-voltage direct current, silver ions are generated at the anode. When water passes through the auxiliary unit, silver ions diffuse into the water under the flow, purifying the water. The microelectronic controller controls the amount of silver ions produced by regulating the magnitude of the direct current. It also includes a timer to control polarity reversal, preventing unequal electrode consumption. When both electrodes are completely consumed, a new pair of electrodes can be replaced to continue use.

5、Selection and Installation

The silver ion disinfector is a timed-start device (not operating 24 hours). Selection is based on the total system volume to control the silver ion concentration in the entire hot water system without exceeding limits, rather than using parameters such as diameter or flow rate as reference values. Silver ions disperse throughout the system pipes and water tank, taking 1–3 hours to achieve disinfection effects.)

The power consumption of the silver ion disinfector during operation is ≤30W, and the power does not change with the selection size (the latest upgraded intelligent silver ion product series has a power consumption of ≤36W). The device can precisely control the generation of an adjustable constant current (microcurrent accuracy error ±2mA), thereby accurately controlling the release of silver ions and ensuring that the silver ion concentration in the system does not exceed the national drinking water standard limit of 0.05 mg/L.

(1) Basic Regulations

a) The silver ion disinfector should be installed on the main return pipe of the hot water system, between the water heating equipment and the circulation pump.

b) The silver ion dosage should be determined based on on-site water quality measurements. In the absence of measured data, the dosage can be set to no more than 0.08 mg/L, and the concentration at the outlet should not exceed 0.05 mg/L.

c) The silver ion disinfector is generally set to operate daily from 00:00 to 06:00, with the dosage determined based on the system volume (including the total volume of water heating equipment, pipes, etc.).

6、Technical Standards

The human body has a certain limit for silver ion intake. The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) stipulates that the safe value of silver for the human body is below 0.05 ppm, and the limit for silver ions in drinking water is 0.05 mg/L.

The silver ion disinfector uses physical disinfection. Silver ions can penetrate bacterial cell walls, enter the cells, combine with intracellular DNA and RNA, and destroy bacterial proteases and respiratory enzymes, leading to cell dissolution and death. After the bacterial cells are deactivated, some silver ions are released from the cells and come into contact with other bacteria, inactivating them and repeating the sterilization process, thus achieving disinfection.
