Plastic uniaxial geogrid is manufactured by punching holes in polymer sheets (typically made of polypropylene or high-density polyethylene) produced through extrusion, followed by oriented stretching under heating conditions. Uniaxial stretched geogrid is stretched only along the length of the sheet, while biaxial stretched geogrid is further stretched in the direction perpendicular to its length.
During the manufacturing process, the polymer macromolecules in plastic geogrid realign and orient themselves as the material is heated and stretched, strengthening the bonds between molecular chains and thereby enhancing its strength. The elongation rate is only 10% to 15% of that of the original sheet. If anti-aging materials such as carbon black are added to the geogrid, it can achieve better resistance to acids, alkalis, corrosion, and aging.
Applications of Uniaxial Geogrid:
Uniaxial Geogrid 1. Reinforcing weak foundations: Uniaxial geogrid can quickly improve the bearing capacity of foundations, control settlement development, and effectively distribute loads to a wider subbase through lateral confinement of the road base, thereby reducing base thickness, lowering engineering costs, shortening construction periods, and extending service life.
2. For cement pavements: When laid at the bottom of cement pavement layers, geogrid can reduce rut depth, extend pavement fatigue resistance, and decrease the thickness of cement pavement, resulting in cost savings.
3. Reinforcing embankment slopes and retaining walls: Traditional embankments, especially high embankments, often require overfilling, and the edges of the shoulders are difficult to compact, leading to issues such as water infiltration, slope collapse, and instability. Additionally, gentler slopes are needed, which occupy more land. Retaining walls face similar problems. Using geogrid to reinforce embankment slopes or retaining walls can reduce land occupation by half, extend service life, and lower costs by 20–50%.
4. Reinforcing river and sea embankments: Geogrid can be used to create gabions, which, when combined with the grid, prevent embankments from collapsing due to seawater erosion. Gabions are permeable, reducing wave impact, extending the lifespan of embankments, saving labor and resources, and shortening construction periods.
5. For landfill treatment: When used in combination with other geosynthetic materials, geogrid can effectively address issues such as uneven settlement and gas emissions in landfills, while maximizing storage capacity.
