Glutaraldehyde is a colorless or pale yellow clear liquid with a slightly irritating, distinctive odor. It is soluble in water and organic solvents such as ether and ethanol. In aqueous solutions, it exists mostly in various forms of hydrates, predominantly with cyclic structures, rather than in free form. Glutaraldehyde is highly reactive, prone to polymerization and oxidation, and reacts with compounds containing active oxygen and nitrogen. Its reaction with proteins primarily involves the carbonyl group reacting with amino groups in protein molecules. Among known aldehydes, glutaraldehyde is an excellent protein crosslinking agent. It exhibits strong bactericidal properties and has minimal impact on enzyme activity; most enzymes can be immobilized and crosslinked under controlled conditions without deactivation. Due to its numerous superior characteristics, glutaraldehyde has garnered significant attention and is widely applied.

Glutaraldehyde is hailed as the third milestone in the history of chemical disinfectants and sterilants, following formaldehyde and ethylene oxide. It features low methanol content, is non-mutagenic, non-cumulatively toxic, and non-eutrophic. Glutaraldehyde has extensive applications in petroleum extraction, healthcare, biochemistry, protein crosslinking, and is also widely used in instrument sanitation, leather processing, plastics, adhesives, fuels, fragrances, textiles, papermaking, printing, photography, and more. It can also be used to synthesize various organic reagents and produce heterocyclic compounds.
