I. Technical Background

Oily wastewater from the catering industry refers to sewage discharged into drainage pipes during food service operations. It is characterized by high grease content, particularly due to the Chinese diet, which results in exceptionally high levels of grease and total suspended solids (TSS). The grease content is approximately 7600 mg/L, and TSS is around 5000 mg/L. This type of wastewater poses two major hazards: First, large amounts of grease and residues easily adhere to the inner walls of drainage pipes, gradually reducing the effective flow area and eventually causing blockages. Second, significant quantities of grease entering sewage treatment plants through the pipeline network can severely damage or kill grease-sensitive biological bacteria, leading to a noticeable decline in effluent quality and pollution of discharged water bodies. Therefore, the issue of grease removal from catering wastewater has long been a major challenge that is urgent to solve yet difficult to address effectively. The root cause is the lack of suitable products or those that meet market acceptance in terms of both effluent quality and product price.
II. Working Principle and Technical Analysis of the PCTGY-Type Non-Powered Restaurant Grease Interceptor

The PCTGY-type non-powered restaurant grease interceptor combines gravity separation, biochemical treatment, and mechanical gap filtration. It is a highly efficient oily wastewater discharge filter with strong processing capacity and high separation efficiency.

First, the oily wastewater enters an adjustment tank, where it remains for about half an hour. During this time, the flow stabilizes, allowing dispersed oil and scum to rise to the surface, while larger particles settle at the bottom. The water is then directed through a partition and outlet into a biochemical filter. From the filter's lower inlet, the water flows upward, passing through the inlet holes of each filter layer, overflows the weir, and enters the sedimentation area. Due to the filter's unique design, which increases surface area and extends the weir length, and the use of oleophilic materials, the wastewater flows very slowly through the filter. This allows sufficient contact with microorganisms growing on the filter surface. These microorganisms decompose and adsorb fine organic particles encapsulated in the grease. Meanwhile, the narrow gaps between the filter layers block the passage of微粒. The treated water then collects from the overflow outlets of each layer into a longitudinal outlet channel and finally exits through the filter outlet. This process effectively removes grease and sediment, isolates oily fine particles, and degrades organic components through bacterial action, significantly reducing the levels of fats, oils, and grease (FOG), total suspended solids (TSS), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the effluent.

In October 2010, the product was tested by the Shanghai Tongji University Environmental Protection Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center. The test report showed that the influent COD was 626 mg/L, and the effluent was 284 mg/L, achieving a removal rate of 54.6%. The influent TSS was 5163 mg/L, and the effluent was 82.5 mg/L, with a removal rate of 98.4%. The influent FOG (animal and vegetable oils) was 7666 mg/L, and the effluent was 56.3 mg/L, with a removal rate of 99.3%. These results fully meet the national tertiary discharge standards and the water quality standards for sewage discharged into urban sewer systems.
